The Past, Present and Future of the Environment-Peace Nexus

Abstract
The linkage between peace and the environment is evident; both severe environmental issues and violent conflicts, such as war, undermine dignified and secure living conditions. This article explores the historical evolution of the environment-peace nexus, a bi-directional and multi-scalar concept that connects these two domains since the World War II. Due to the recent outbreak of wars in Europe and Middle East, the environment and peace nexus is evolving again, though much of the conceptual development has been shaped by historical events. Nuclear testing and proliferation, ecocide during the Vietnam War, and militarization during the Cold War have shaped how peace research approaches environmental issues. Securitizing and de-securitizing the policy discourse emerged subsequently. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine leading to a large-scale war in Europe and Hamas’ airstrikes on Israel triggering a new Middle Eastern conflict, massive environmental destruction caused by war is increasing interest in ecocide. Looking ahead, the need for peacebuilding to prevent future conflicts driven by climate change is increasingly recognized, with the potential of climate action’s contribution to peacebuilding.
