From ‘the iceberg’ to ‘the top’: Criticism on Johan Galtung’s Concept of ‘Structural Violence’

Abstract

This research critically deals with Johan Galtung’s concept of “structural violence” by dividing it into four aspects. To begin with, the concept of “structural violence” is too vague and useless for scientific analysis because it encompasses various phenomena such as injustice, inequality, discrimination, and disasters in an undifferentiated way. Second, the concept ignores the gap between structure and action. Structures do not act. Third, the concept takes no notice of the dynamic process of violence and the physical experience of violence because it focuses attention only on the abstract outcome of structure. Finally, this perspective has lost its practical character as it excludes war from peace studies. The concept and perspective of “structural violence” have closed our eyes to the dynamics of violence. In order for the pluralistic perspective of peace theory to develop, it is necessary to move away from the concept of “structural violence.”
