A Study on the Possibility of Paradigm Shift in DMZ Tourism: Focusing on Reviewing Prior Research on ‘Security Tourism’ and ‘Peace Tourism'

Abstract

This article is an investigation into the possibility of DMZ peace tourism on the Korean Peninsula in light of the recent political and military situation between the two Koreas. this study aims to analyse the shifting interests of government policy makers and scholars who have tried to change the paradigm from security tourism to peace tourism. In this paper the possibility of a paradigm shift is sought to look at DMZ tourism from the perspective of peace tourism. The term ‘security tourism’ can provoke the North or provide a pretext for provocation. This study demonstrates why a paradigm shift towards peace tourism is necessary, while analysing research in the field of security tourism.
