This study critically examines the ‘PeaceㆍUnification Education’ policy that emerged during the Moon Jae-in administration(2017-2022). The ‘PeaceㆍUnification Education’ policy simply connects the two concepts of peace and unification with a middot(ㆍ) without sufficiently reflecting the complex context of the two concepts. This study analyzes the goals of ‘PeaceㆍUnification Education’ by dividing them into three: South Korea’s dual relations with North Korea, raising sound security awareness, and peaceful unification. It criticizes that each goal solidifies North Korea and South Korea as antagonistic identities, reinforces a nationalistic worldview centered on military security, and overlooks the diversity and complexity required in the process of pursuing peace. In this context, this study points out that the ‘peaceㆍunification education’ policy not only positions learners as passive beings, but also defines citizens as objects of policy rather than subjects, and that the South Korean government’s peaceㆍunification education is still unable to escape hostile dichotomies and militaristic inertia that the reality of the division presses on. The paper proposes an educational paradigm shift that can more comprehensively reconstruct the issues of peace and unification.
