This paper deals with the exhibition narrative of Imperial War Museum London and Imperial War Museum North. The Imperial War Museums was established during the first World War to cope with the total war. For calming anti-war opinion and mobilizing the British nations and subject of British empire, government started systematic collecting of war objects and opened Imperial War Museum at Crystal Palace in 1919. Instead of creating an aura of noble sacrifice for the nation, the Imperial War Museum takes a multifaceted approach to showing the horrors of war and its impact on people’s daily experiences. Asking viewers to be ‘eyewitnesses’ to every war and conflict in the 20th century, the Imperial War Museum conveys a meaning of peace that goes beyond conventional normative lessons about war and is based on empathy for the suffering of others. I appreciate that the Imperial War Museum makes an effort to avoid militaristic or patriotic narratives. However, it can be hypocritical or hollow to show racial discrimination in a representation of colonial soldiers at war, or to have an exhibition that asks us to empathize with refugees while not criticizing the arms industry. If empathy is emphasized in the face of the human suffering of war, but that empathy is limited to selective empathy. In that sense, we can only evaluate that the idea of peace in a war museum such as the Imperial War Museum has both achievements and limitations.
