Abstract
This paper analyzes the exhibitions at the DMZ Museum in Goseong, Gangwon Province. It defines itself as “a museum that accurately captures, remembers, and records the DMZ, the only demilitarized zone in the world,” It deals with the Korean War, military conflicts after the war, and ecological environments of the DMZ. Above all, the DMZ is represented as a space of peace and life, not as a military buffer zone preparing for war and enunciates its aims of restoring the homogeneity of North and South Korea and preparing for reunification. With such a background and orientation, visitors would expect the museum to adopt a different narrative and representation about the DMZ and the Korean War, the cause of the DMZ’s creation, in comparison with the existing Korean War memorials. However, the DMZ Museum’s narrative and representation put more focuses on the Korean War, the post-war state of the DMZ, and the military conflicts between North and South Korea, and have a very similar approach with that of Korean War memorials.
